ACTIVITY REPORT OF GOOD SHEPHERD CONVENT APRIL 2013 - MARCH 2014

The year has been quite creative and innovative in carrying out the regular programmes. Besides our regular activities we had some special programmes during the year.

1.EUCATIONAL SERVICE

We had seminars for Parents and Teachers: Teachers’ Seminar was held at the beginning of the academic year. Parent- Teacher Seminar on ‘Holistic Parenting’ was conducted. Seminar for Std V students were conducted on “Processing of milk and its uses.” We had meeting with the parents and teacher every month to enhance personal and academic development in each child.

Our school conducted an Inter- School Competition for the primary kids alone. It was a first of its kind to be held in Chennai and all who participated were thrilled with the meticulous planning and executing. 20 schools took part. 2 schools dealing with the less privileged also were allowed to participate.

Celebrations like Investiture Ceremony, St. Mary Euphrasia’s Birthday, Teacher’s Day, Children’s Day, Kamarajar’s Birthday, (referred to as Education Improvement Day) Republic Day,

Independence Day, World Aids Day, etc helps to foster unity and respect among students. Religious festivals like Pongal, Ramzan and Deepavali were also celebrated thereby instilling respect for all religions.

HUMANITARIAN AND CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES

Santa 2013 was an experience of “caring and sharing” with the poor and the needy. Through Santa 2013 an event that gave a beautiful opportunity for our children to interact with the physically/differently challenged and less privileged children during Christmas.

Community Service: This year our students of Std XI went regularly for their community service to Little Flower School for the Blind and St. Antony’s School. Students of Std. IX visited the Juvenile home and interacted with the girls. All the other classes visited Sri. Arunodhayam a centre for the mentally challenged destitute children and assisted and motivated them in book binding and jewelry making

55 students of Std. XII visited Leprosy Centre at Vellore and interacted with the inmates and helped them by cleaning their garden and painting their cots. This year, many students and teachers have been given the opportunity to scribe for the Public Exams for differently able students from various schools and colleges. Our children along with teachers visited 10 nearby slums a Christmas programme which was attended by 900 children from around 10 nearby slums as well as few institutions in Chennai.

2.SOCIAL SERVICE:Mottukal; (Shelter home for street children and girls)

Health care was carried out for the overall welfare of the children, and healthy food is provided to the children.

Special celebrations:

Birthday Celebration, National Girl Child Day Celebration, Deepavali, Pongal Day Celebration, Christmas Celebration, Child Labour and Child Rights Day were celebrated meaningfully.

Celebrations: The two important celebrations during this year were Hostel day and Christmas.

3. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT -Salem Coaching Classes:

About 400 children were helped daily through the 12 coaching centres in the evenings in different villages. Counseling is also given whenever needed. Children are also encouraged to save whenever they get money from their parents and relatives.

Sponsorship programme: 122 children received sponsorship from CHALICE project towards education, health, clothing, family/community needs etc.

Skill Training in tailoring: 46 young girls and women have learnt tailoring to equip themselves for alternative income. We have given 6 tailoring machines to poor students. They are also given value based classes in health and hygiene

Women and Youth development: We organized classes on values and counseling programs to come out of their fears and worries and to have self-confidence.

Prison Ministry:

We are one of the Active Members of the Prison Ministry of India (PMI). One of us visits the Central Jail in Salem every week and conducts awareness classes and counsels them.

Celebrations:

The International Women’s Day was organized with competitions like Rongoli, Speech, Dance, etc. We celebrated Children’s Day, AyudhaPooja, Christmas and Pongal, in-order to bring the women and children together and help them to know their rights and make them realize the meaning and significance of these celebrations.
